Derek Peace: Techno, Dubtechno, Experimental. Modernistic on the DJ front, this is no reflection of Derek's music career. From the early age of 13 he has been experimenting with sound, playing a variety of instruments like guitar, bass and drums.Worth noting , is Derek's grade 1 for his drumming performance at school - an indication that bigger things in the beats department were to come!
Coming from the Highlands - where music is the soul of the community and there is an exceptionally high standard of performance - has helped Derek cut his teeth in the world of DJ-ing rapidly! Submission was the first major creation of D. Peace, giving him the weekly outplay to busy crowds that boosted his performance skills and trickery.
Classifying himself as a 'tweaker', Derek loves to pinch, pull, tease and twist the sound. Within a year of Dj-ing Derek had played the Big Room on numerous occasions, received bookings from other local clubs and even booked his first established guest. Before the year was out he got his first gig outside of Aberdeen at 'Split' in Cabaret Voltaire in Edinburgh! More recently, he has made several trips down to the capital for returns to 'Split' and even more recently for 'Animal Hospital'. Also of late, Derek has been gaining attention from his homeland, securing recent bookings back up in the Highlands.
Derek's taste in music centers around true sound with a primal vision. After playing grunge music in bands from an early age, Derek's vision has always been tinged with a metallic edge. Natural progression into electronica came at the age of 16 where he found himself at house parties listening to hard-edged house music.
It was not long before he realised he wanted more from electronic music and when he made the move to Aberdeen in 2000 he dicovered Luke Slater's classic doublesided album 'Fear and Loathing'. On the first listen to the first track he knew this was the gernre he had been missing out on. After some investigation he fully indulged himself in Techno, going to 'I Love Techno' on annual jaunts; 'Monegros' desert festival; 'Awakenings'; 'Timewarp', 'A.D.E'.. the list goes on.
Whilst mainly structuring his sound on Techno, over the last year he has been experimenting with Dubstep; merging the sounds of the two genres has now become a well known trait of his. This sound so stereotypical of some of his current favourite artists: Scuba, Surgeon and Shackleton (to name a few).
Derek's love of the tribal drums and dark metallic melody's has moulded him into the DJ he is today. He is mindful of the fact that he is very youthful in the performance side of the underground scene but is dedicated to his passion and his work.
